Even “beyond the letter of the law” has many levels. For example: at the
beginning of Pirkei Avos we read, “be not like a servant who serves his master
for the reward, be like a servant who serves his master without thought of
reward”. Without thought of a reward is beyond the letter of the law, but
serving one’s master is not.
A higher level of service is “giving till it hurts when you are not expected to
give at all”. A convert is not obligated to convert. He is in fact discouraged
from converting yet every convert bears the pain that conversion must bring!
Pain for G-dliness when there is no law or obligation at all.
What is the message to all Jews and do we go beyond the letter of the law when
there is no law
